America Recycles Day Calendar winners honored
MARSHALLTOWN - Thirteen Marshall County students received honors for creating winning poster designs during an America Recycles Day celebration held on Nov. 12 at Iowa Valley Continuing Education. Austin Cox, a fifth grader at Green Mountain-Garwin Elementary, was chosen the grand prizewinner of a $100 Savings Bond from the Marshall County Landfill. Austin’s poster was selected from 411 poster entries as the cover of the 2010 calendar.
This was the sixth year a contest has been held for students in grades K-6 in the Marshall County Landfill service area to enter a recycling theme poster. The winning posters are then printed on calendars that help remind everyone to protect the environment by reducing solid waste through recycling.
Winners of the 2009 Calendar Poster Contest were: Payson Gillespie, kindergarten, Green Mountain-Garwin Elementary; Autumn Peterson, first grade, GMG Elementary; Angel Schewe, first grade, GMG Elementary; Reahna Van Rees, second grade, GMG Elementary; Mallory Fisher, third grade, GMG Elementary; Nathan Hayes, third grade, East Marshall Elementary; KaeLynne Meling, fourth grade, GMG Elementary; Olivia Ryan, fourth grade, Anson Elementary; Aspen Chadderdon, fifth grade, Marshalltown Christian School; Josie Claassen, fifth grade GMG Elementary; Austin Cox, fifth grade, GMG Elementary; Haley Kilborn, sixth grade, East Marshall Middle School; and Kennedy Kimberley, sixth grade, GMG Elementary.
Joe Robertson, Marshall County Landfill manager thanked the students for their hard work n the designs and presented each winner with a certificate, a cash award, an America Recycles Day t-shirt made of recycled material, and a packet of calendars for family members, classmates and teachers.
Pam Blake, Director Recycling and Solid Waste Education at IVCE, and Carol Vert, Marshall County Landfill Office Manager, organized the contest and distributed information on the 2010 contest. Blake thanked the teachers for supporting the contest and including recycling education in the classroom.
